I take seen this matchstick puzzle being posted on LinkedIn many times now, and the posters never conspicuously explain what the rules are or how are we suppose to count the matchsticks or for that affair of fact what is the solution to this puzzle. So I got my trusty Zippo lighter, some matchsticks (really absurd stormproof matchsticks), and my iPhone six, and decided to end this mystery once and for all.

The rules, so, are we counting the actual matchsticks we can see in the picture or are we counting the reflections in the Zippo lighter of the matchsticks as well? I always understood that they, previous posters, meant that we are counting the bodily matchsticks we can come across in the picture, reflections of matchsticks do not count. To be fair, I believe actual counting matchsticks is preferred method, and not catchy, and makes information technology very simple to make an educated guess or does it? Will most people get it right? At present, allow's get started, run into Image 1 all the pieces are in place, you just need to count.

Paradigm 1. The Puzzle is ready, matches and the Zippo lighter, in place and their positions.

If y'all wait the Paradigm 1 carefully, then you will come across that five matchsticks are laying in forepart of the Nothing lighter and you can run into the same number of matchsticks in the reflection of the Zippo lighter. In the back of the lighter, there are three matchsticks, and these 3 expect every bit if they are part of the reflection in the Zippo lighter, but since they are emerging out from behind there has to exist 3 matchsticks backside the Zippo lighter.

Paradigm 2 . Hither is a look at the matchstick puzzle from a different point of view (or Prototype ane  rotated 90 degrees).

Now, since the solution to this puzzle was never posted, it'due south time to put this puzzle to remainder once and for all, by showing the solution via pictures of the Zippo lighter and matchsticks, from a unlike perspective. So now how many matchsticks practice you see, hmm?

Aye, the respond to the matchstick puzzle is 5 (front of the Zippo lighter) + iii (in the back of the Zippo lighter) = 8 matchsticks in the picture.

The motivation behind this puzzle is simple to prove the slight of hand or that most of the puzzles posted on the Cyberspace are subjective and practise not reveal or mensurate whatsoever intelligence of the person trying to solve information technology, simply it is entertaining.
