How To Hide Photos Of You On Facebook

Because anyone can load a picture onto Facebook and "tag" you in it, you may want to minimize the number of people who see these tagged "Photos of You".

Accessing Timeline and Tagging Privacy Settings

After logging onto Facebook, click the arrow at the top right corner (you can do this from anywhere), and select Privacy Settings.

On the next page, you'll see a number of options for general privacy. In terms of overall privacy, you can set your profile to Public, Friends, or Customize it. For our purposes, select Edit Settings next to "Timeline and Tagging".

Next to "Who can see posts you've been tagged in on your timeline", select Friends. If Friends of Friends or Everyone are chosen, many more people will be able to see photos and posts about you by looking through your timeline.

If you need extra privacy, select Custom, which brings you to another box where you can select Specific People or Lists... who can see posts and photos about you, or you can choose Only Me to keep things to yourself.

Timeline Review

Once privacy is established (for you only, for specific friends, or for your friends), some people may wish to keep tabs of what photos in which people are tagging them. Facebook has a great option in the Timeline and Tagging window called "Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline."

Enable this to approve posts before they appear on your timeline.

Untagging Photos of You

Sometimes photos are inappropriate for Facebook regardless of privacy settings. Unfortunately, because you didn't upload the picture, you cannot delete it. In such cases, simply go ahead and "untag" yourself from the photo.

Navigate to your Photos (right under your Cover Photo on your timeline), select Photos of You to find the photo you want untagged, and hold your mouse over it.

Select the little pencil and then, from the pulldown menu, Report/Remove Tag. On the next screen, you'll have the choice to I want to untag myself or I want the photo taken down, which will generate a message to the person who posted the picture (you could also ask them yourself). There's also an option to inform Facebook if this picture is your Intellectual Property.

Unless a photo is completely embarrassing, or potentially harmful to your home or professional lives, then untagging yourself, rather than taking them down, is probably the way to go. Click Continue to finish that process.
